Mary Fuller celebrated her tenth anniversary in the sport by gaining three medals at the English National Junior Championship.

The 17-year-old from Keighley was a semi-finalist in the under-18 girls’ singles and runner-up in both the under-18 girls’ doubles and under-18 mixed doubles at the Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Oakbank Table Tennis Club member Fuller, who is already a senior international, started the day a little apprehensively but improved as the day went on.

She qualified for the girls’ singles semi-finals, where she met the England No 1 and top seed Karina le Fevre, Fuller (pictured) lost the first game 12-10 to the Cleveland girl but won the next 17-15 before bowing out 11-9, 11-6 .

The Keighley teenager was then unable to play the mixed doubles final – through no fault of her own.

Having reached that stage without dropping a game, the final became a walkover as her partner Daniel Lowe had received a red card earlier in the day for excessive bat abuse.

The Cheshire boy let a two-game lead slip in the last 32 of the boys’ singles and took out his frustration on a nearby wall. Lowe soon calmed down after his outburst and spent much of the rest of the day apologising.

Top seeds Fuller and Le Fevre also reached the girls’ doubles final without dropping a game but lost the decider to Chloe Whyte and Jessica Dawson 11-8, 11-6, 11-9 in what was an all-Ormesby Table Tennis Club clash.

Fuller, who was seven when she first picked up a table tennis bat, has now won 17 medals in English or British championships – five gold, nine silver and three bronze.
