Tom Moses followed up his National Cyclo-Cross Trophy triumph with success in Belgium.

Just a week after clinching the junior men’s crown in the six-race series with one event to spare, the Oakworth rider kept up the winning habit on foreign soil.

After finishing fifth in the junior men’s category in Lictervelde, Moses stepped up a gear the day afterwards to finish first in Uitbergen.

Moses was part of a Yorkshire team led by Keighley veteran Chris Young, which included Tom’s brother Joe, Bingley’s Rob Watson and Wilsden’s Tom Baldwin.

The trip was funded by the Yorkshire Cyclocross Association and the Keith Edwards Cyclocross Fund.

Racing in temperatures well below freezing, riders needed power along the rutted snow and good bike handling skills to negotiate slippery corners.

With no ranking points, Moses and his Yorkshire team-mates were gridded right at the back of around 40 riders in Lictervelde.

This made passing and moving up hard but, after the first lap, Moses entered the top 20 and ultimately made it to fifth.

The Team Wallis rider enjoyed a better gridding in Uitbergen, managing to get on the second row.

A slip from the rider in front of him on the grid allowed him to make a move and get straight into the top four by the first corner.

After the first lap, he attacked and gained a big gap in taking the lead.

From then on, he steadily increased his advantage, having plenty of time to celebrate with a winning margin of 28 seconds.

Watson and Baldwin – who both race for Paul Milnes RT – entered a world-class field in Antwerp and produced respectable rides, coming 50th and 48th respectively in front of a 20,000 plus crowd.

The event was won by former world champion and current Belgium champion Sven Nys, with 2009 world-title holder Neils Albert back in seventh.

National Trophy leader Paul Oldham, from Lancashire, finished in 44th place.

The race was delayed for 15 minutes, with temperatures at -9, after the course had to be diverted due to a live hand grenade being discovered!

  • Tim Baldwin and Rob Watson were on good form at the Macclesfield Royals Supacross on Sunday.

Baldwin took fifth place, while Watson – recovering from a recent knee injury – was 15th and first under-23.

Oxenhope’s Matt Denby (Zepnat) took seventh and team-mate Jon Watson, of Bradford, was 19th.

The quality of the field was more like a National Trophy event, with Lancashire’s Paul Oldham in a different league to the rest of the field.

He lapped the whole field, apart from second-placed former professional Nick Craig.
